Obverse: Head of Mars left wearing crested helmet ornamented with plume and annulet. Reverse: Two warriors fighting, each armed with sword and shield; the one on the left protects a fallen comrade, the other wears horned helmet.

Mars, the Roman god of war, was claimed as ancestor of the Roman people through his fathering of Romulus and Remus, and his image suited a moneyer advertising martial virtue.

The combat scene is generally taken to commemorate an act of battlefield heroism by an ancestor of the moneyer, possibly the consul of 217 BC Gn. Minucius Thermus or a relative, who rescued a fallen comrade from an enemy, perhaps a Gaul or a Ligurian to judge from the horned helmet.
