Julius Caesar received the unprecedented honor of having his portrait struck on Roman coinage in early 44 BC, only weeks before his assassination on the Ides of March; the wreath marks his recent appointment as dictator perpetuo and his right to wear triumphal laurel at all times.

Venus Victrix was the patron goddess of the Julian gens, which claimed descent from her through Aeneas, and Caesar had vowed her a temple before the battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC.

Obverse legend: P M, abbreviating *Pontifex Maximus*, the office of chief priest of the Roman state religion that Caesar had held since 63 BC.
