Gaius Julius Caesar, dictator perpetuo by early 44 BC, became the first living Roman to place his own portrait on the state coinage, a precedent struck only weeks before his assassination on the Ides of March.

Venus appears as the divine ancestress of the Julian gens, a lineage Caesar traced through Iulus to Aeneas and which he had advertised throughout his career, most prominently in the Temple of Venus Genetrix dedicated in his Forum in 46 BC.

Rough surface with smoothing and tooling marks from cleaning.

Toned with underlying luster. A few light scratches on reverse. Well struck with bold and expressive portrait.
