**Obverse context.** The female head personifies Clementia, the quality of mercy that Caesar cultivated as his political signature during the civil war against Pompey, and the oak wreath alludes to the *corona civica* awarded for saving the lives of citizens.

**Reverse context.** The trophy of Gallic arms commemorates Caesar's conquest of Gaul, completed only the year before this issue was struck and the foundation of the military reputation he carried into the war against Pompey.

**Obverse legend translation.** LII is the numeral fifty-two, almost certainly a reference to Caesar's age in 48 BC, advertising his seniority and accumulated *auctoritas* at the moment of decisive confrontation with Pompey.
