Obverse: Draped bust of Diva Marciana right with hair in multiple curls at forehead held by double stephane and twisted plait in back. Reverse: Eagle standing facing and leaning left with head right, both wings displayed, gripping scepter with talons.

**Obverse context.** Marciana was Trajan's elder sister, granted the title Augusta and deified upon her death in AD 112 or 113, with this coin struck shortly after her consecration.

**Reverse context.** The eagle bearing a scepter is the standard Roman emblem of apotheosis, the bird understood to carry the soul of the deified deceased to the heavens.

**Obverse legend translation.** DIVA • AVGVSTA MARCIANA • means "The Divine Augusta Marciana," combining her posthumous divine status with the imperial honorific she had received in life.

**Reverse legend translation.** CONSECRATIO means "consecration," the formal act by which the Senate enrolled a deceased member of the imperial family among the gods of the Roman state.
