Nero, the last Julio-Claudian emperor, came to power in AD 54 at sixteen through the maneuvering of his mother Agrippina, and the early years reflected here belong to the so-called *quinquennium Neronis* before his reign turned to extravagance and terror.

The oak wreath, or *corona civica*, was awarded for saving the lives of citizens and had become a standard imperial honor since Augustus, here framing a declaration that the issue was struck by senatorial authority.

Obverse legend: NERO • CAESAR • AVG • IMP •, expanding to *Nero Caesar Augustus Imperator*, "Nero Caesar, revered commander," with AVG for *Augustus* and IMP for *Imperator*.

Reverse legend: PONTIF • MAX • TR • P V • P • P • with EX S C in exergue, expanding to *Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Potestate V, Pater Patriae, Ex Senatus Consulto*, "Chief Priest, holding tribunician power for the fifth time, Father of the Country, by decree of the Senate." The fifth tribunician year places the issue in AD 58-59.

Attractively toned, slightly granular surfaces, scattered shallow scratches.

Charming toning with solid overall detail; edge chipping is mild.
