Nero, the last Julio-Claudian emperor, ruled from AD 54 to 68 and reformed the imperial coinage around AD 64, lowering the weight of the denarius to the standard on which this issue was struck.

Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, appears here under the epithet *Custos*, "the Guardian," a cult Nero promoted after the Pisonian conspiracy of AD 65 was uncovered and he credited the god with his preservation.
