Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and adopted as the heir of Julius Caesar, became Rome's first emperor in 27 BC and reshaped the Republic into the Principate that would govern the empire for the next three centuries.

The oak wreath, the *corona civica*, was awarded to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC for saving the lives of citizens, an honor traditionally given to a soldier who had rescued a comrade in battle and now reframed as a recognition of his role in ending the civil wars.

Reverse legend: OB CIVIS SERVATOS, "for saving the citizens," the formula that accompanied the award of the civic crown.

Exceedingly bright and lustrous with sharp portrait in high relief. Off-center reverse strike and light cleaning marks.

Wonderful toning, struck slightly off center

Iridescent toning, areas of find patina, porosity, roughness, some edge loss

Minimal wear with great detail remaining. Some off-centering on reverse. Elegant eye appeal with glints of brilliance on wholesome surfaces.

Toned with banker's mark on obverse and uniform surface corrosion

Lightly toned with some light marks and scratches.
