Augustus, the first Roman emperor, ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14 and consolidated power after defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC.

The oak wreath is the *corona civica*, voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC for saving the lives of Roman citizens, an honor traditionally given to a soldier who rescued a comrade in battle and one of the principal symbolic foundations of his new regime.
