Obverse: Youthful bare head of Augustus facing right within an oak wreath. Reverse: Ornamental candelabrum with rams' heads and crescent finial, surrounded by a floral wreath entwined with two bucrania and two pateras.

Augustus, Rome's first emperor, ruled from 27 BC until AD 14; the oak wreath surrounding his portrait is the *corona civica*, voted to him by the Senate in 27 BC for saving the lives of citizens.

The candelabrum and floral wreath hung with *bucrania* and *paterae* evoke the sacrificial furniture of Roman religion, likely alluding to the Secular Games of 17 BC, which Augustus celebrated to mark the dawn of a new age.
