Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and adopted heir of Julius Caesar, received the title by which he is known in January of 27 BC, the same year this coin was struck and the moment at which the Republic was formally refashioned into the Principate.

The corona rostrata, a wreath ornamented with the beaks of warships, was a naval honor that here recalls the victory at Actium in 31 BC, where Augustus's fleet defeated Antony and Cleopatra and left him master of the Roman world.

Lightly toned with hairlines, scratch and edge scrape on reverse.
