Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and adopted heir of Julius Caesar, received the title *Augustus* from the Senate in 27 BC after consolidating power following the civil wars, becoming Rome's first emperor.

The oak wreath, or *corona civica*, was an ancient military honor for saving the life of a Roman citizen, voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC for having rescued the citizenry through the restoration of peace.

Obverse legend: CAESAR AVGVSTVS, "Caesar Augustus," combining his inherited name with the honorific title bestowed by the Senate.

Reverse legend: OB CIVIS SERVATOS, "for saving the citizens," the formula traditionally inscribed on the *corona civica* and here commemorating the Senate's award of that honor to Augustus.
