**Obverse context.** Augustus, by 13 BC, had consolidated nearly two decades of sole rule, and the *lituus* beside his head marks his standing as augur, the priestly office concerned with reading divine signs.

**Reverse context.** The figure styled as Diana is widely understood to carry the features of Julia the Elder, Augustus's only child, whose marriage to Agrippa that year produced heirs the dynasty would lean on heavily before her disgrace and exile in 2 BC.

**Obverse legend translation.** AVGVSTVS, "the revered one," the honorific title conferred on Octavian by the Senate in 27 BC and by which he was thereafter known.

**Reverse legend translation.** C • MARIVS • TRO III • VIR, expanded as *Gaius Marius Tromentina tribu triumvir*, identifying the moneyer Gaius Marius of the Tromentine voting tribe as one of the *tresviri monetales*, the three junior magistrates responsible for the Roman mint.
