Obverse: Equestrian statue of Augustus riding right on a low square pedestal before a city wall with arched entrance. Reverse: Cippus inscribed with multiple lines of text.

**Obverse context.** Augustus, Rome's first emperor, is honored here by an equestrian monument voted to him by the Senate, the type of public statuary by which the new regime advertised itself in the heart of the city.

**Reverse context.** The cippus reproduces the dedicatory inscription of a monument set up by the Senate and People of Rome in recognition of Augustus's relief of the public treasury, part of the financial reorganization of the principate during the moneyer year of 16 BC.

**Obverse legend translation.** S P Q R / IMP / CAES expands to *Senatus Populusque Romanus, Imperatori Caesari*, "The Senate and the Roman People, to the Emperor Caesar." *SPQR* is the standing formula for the Roman state, and *IMP CAES* are the abbreviated titles of Augustus.

**Reverse legend translation.** S P Q R / IMP CAE / QVOD V / M S EX / EA P Q IS / AD A DE expands to *Senatus Populusque Romanus Imperatori Caesari, quod viae munitae sunt ex ea pecunia quam is ad aerarium detulit*, "The Senate and the Roman People to the Emperor Caesar, because the roads were paved from that money which he paid into the treasury." The inscription records that Augustus's personal contribution to the *aerarium* funded the repair of Italy's roads.
