Obverse: bare head of Augustus facing right. Reverse: triumphal arch of Augustus with central arch surmounted by a facing quadriga, side arches with standing figures; on left a figure standing right holding a signum in raised hand, on right a figure standing left holding an aquila in raised hand and bow at side.

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius and the adopted heir of Julius Caesar, became Rome's first emperor after defeating Mark Antony at Actium in 31 BC and ruled until AD 14.

The triumphal arch commemorates the diplomatic settlement of 20 BC, in which Parthia returned the legionary standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC and by Antony in 36 BC, a recovery Augustus celebrated as the equal of a military victory.
