Augustus, adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar, became Rome's first emperor in 27 BC and used coinage to reinforce his lineage from the deified dictator.

The comet recalls the *sidus Iulium*, a comet that appeared during the funeral games for Julius Caesar in 44 BC and was interpreted as the soul of the murdered dictator ascending to the heavens, providing the celestial sign that justified his official deification in 42 BC.

Reverse legend: DIVVS IVLIVS, "The Divine Julius," referring to Julius Caesar's posthumous status as a state god, a title that allowed Augustus to style himself *divi filius*, son of the deified.
