**Obverse context.** Fortuna Victrix and Fortuna Felix were twin aspects of the goddess of fortune worshipped at Antium, paired here to evoke the protective luck guiding Augustus through victory and prosperity.

**Reverse context.** The altar refers to the *Ara Fortunae Reducis*, dedicated by the Senate in 19 BC to celebrate Augustus's safe return to Rome from the eastern provinces after settling affairs with Parthia and recovering the lost legionary standards.

**Obverse legend translation.** Q RVSTIVS FORTVNAE reads "Quintus Rustius, (in honor) of Fortuna," naming the moneyer responsible for the issue and dedicating it to the goddess shown.

**Reverse legend translation.** CAESARI AVGVSTO, EX S C reads "To Caesar Augustus, by decree of the Senate," with EX S C abbreviating *ex senatus consulto*; the altar inscription FOR RE abbreviates *Fortunae Reduci*, "to Fortuna the Home-Bringer."

Deep iridescent toning, some porosity and shallow scratches under tone, hairline flan crack, edge marks, chipping at edge reveals crystallization.

Toned with banker's mark on obverse, scratch on reverse, and deposits.
