Augustus, the first Roman emperor, consolidated sole rule after the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra in 31 B.C. and reigned until A.D. 14.

The *clipeus virtutis* was a golden shield voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 B.C., honoring his virtue, clemency, justice, and piety, and displayed in the Curia Julia alongside the laurel wreath that crowned his door.

Reverse legend: SPQR / CLV, expanding to *Senatus Populusque Romanus* and *Clipeus Virtutis*, "The Senate and People of Rome" and "Shield of Virtue."
