**Obverse:** Augustus, Rome's first emperor, had recently received that honorific title from the Senate in 27 B.C. and was at this date personally directing the final subjugation of the Cantabrian and Asturian peoples in northwestern Hispania.
**Reverse:** The trophy commemorates the victories won in the Cantabrian Wars by Publius Carisius, Augustus's legate in Lusitania, who founded the colony of Emerita Augusta around 25 B.C. to settle veterans of those campaigns.
**Obverse legend:** IMP CAESAR AVGVSTV, for *Imperator Caesar Augustus*, the formal style adopted after 27 B.C. combining his victory acclamation, his adoptive Julian name, and the new honorific granted by the Senate.
**Reverse legend:** P CARISIVS LEG PRO PR, for *Publius Carisius Legatus Pro Praetore*, naming the moneyer as Augustus's propraetorian legate in the province.
