**Obverse context.** Augustus, the first Roman emperor, had by the late 20s B.C. consolidated sole power and received the honorific name Augustus from the Senate in 27 B.C., the moment from which his principate is conventionally dated.
**Reverse context.** The *clipeus virtutis* was a golden shield voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 B.C. and displayed in the Curia Julia, honoring his virtue, clemency, justice, and piety, and it became one of the central emblems of the new regime.
**Obverse legend translation.** CAESAR AVGVSTVS, "Caesar Augustus," combining his inherited Julian name with the title conferred on him by the Senate.
**Reverse legend translation.** S P Q R, expanded *Senatus Populusque Romanus*, "The Senate and the Roman People," flanking CL V for *clipeus virtutis*, "the shield of virtue."
