**Obverse context.** Augustus, Rome's first emperor, is shown wearing the *corona civica*, the oak wreath voted to him by the Senate in 27 BC for having saved the lives of citizens.

**Reverse context.** The comet recalls the *sidus Iulium* that appeared during the funeral games for Julius Caesar in 44 BC, interpreted as the soul of the deified dictator ascending to the heavens and a useful celestial endorsement of his adopted son's authority.

**Reverse legend translation.** DIVVS IVLIVS, "The Divine Julius," referring to Julius Caesar after his official deification by the Senate in 42 BC.
